Organization: Medical Psychiatry Alliance

This course, facilitated by Dr. Sanjeev Sockalingam and Dr. Susan Wnuk, explores the connection between mental health and obesity in adults, focusing on strategies for patient engagement and addressing cognitive and behavioral patterns that impact both physical and emotional well-being. Participants will gain skills in interdisciplinary communication, care plan development, and patient advocacy, using case scenarios and role-plays to practice these approaches.

Upon completion, participants will understand the relationship between mental health issues and obesity, recognize common causes and risk factors, and learn how to create team-based treatment plans for managing both conditions. The course also covers implementing care plans in line with the 2020 Canadian Obesity Guidelines, with resources and tools provided to support practitioners working with patients facing co-occurring obesity and mental health conditions.
